Vacation Inspirations: St. Thomas

With the chill of winter on the way now is the perfect time to escape to the warmth of the U.S. Virgin Islands, no passport is required and St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix all offer unique and amazing experiences for the whole family. Some of the top reasons to visit St. Thomas include the beautiful beaches, snorkeling spots and the capital of Charlotte Amalie, a historic city first established in the 1600’s. The famous 1679 watchtower known as Blackbeard’s Castle is in St. Thomas, as is the great history museum Fort Christian. Some other highlights of St. Thomas are the Skyride aerial tram, the peaceful calm waters of Magens Bay, the Mahogany Run Golf Course and scuba diving sites such as Calf Rocks. Choose the island of St. John for the incredible wildlife, there are exotic birds such as cuckoos and warblers, green turtles, dolphins and more. The snorkeling in St. Johns is also perhaps the best in all of the Virgin Islands; spend a day following the underwater trail at Trunk Bay or see the corals at Hurricane Hole. For history in St. John there is the Annaberg Sugar Plantation and the Elaine Ione Sprauve Library and Museum. St. Croix also offers its own set of unique reasons to visit; there you will find Danish colonial buildings and the Christiansted National Historic Site. St. George Village Botanical Gardens is a popular destination and there are great archaeological sites to explore at Salt River Bay National Park. You can go shore diving at Cane Bay or visit the old Frederiksted Pier, the bird watching at Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge is also fantastic. The famous Cruzan Distillery Rum Tour is also a big draw in St. Croix.
